Let’s Get A Few Thing Clear, Ri Ri

Chinese:

  • ribbon dancing
  • stone palaces and guardian lions
  • Wu Xu films

Japanese:

  • geishas
  • taiko drums
  • ninjas

Have you seen it, Rihanna and Chris Martin’s new video?

Dragon lady + Suzie Wong + Oriental mystical symbols + S&M = "Princess of China"

Directors Bibby and Petty are obviously fans of Zhang Yi Mou's films—Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; House of Flying Daggers; Hero are clearly referenced. Hey I’m a mega fan too, but good lord what has been assembled here?! A mishmash of Orientalist, pseudo-Asian—with a dash of fetishism—images that amount to what?  Some western White dude’s wet dream??

The only thing missing is the Ching-Chong font during the credits.

Yeesh.

Inter-ethnic Discrimination

Don’t mind the tags. It’s to grab attention.
But I do need Asian American and Asia-born people to complete this 30 second survey.

It’s really important for my Asian American Psychology class.

I don’t know if discrimination is the right word for my experiences.  ”Being mildly uncomfortable by hearing about other Asian american’s generalizations about other ethnicities” is probably the closest I’d get to it.

Signal boost.
