The Dowager Empress CiXi (Tzu Hsi)—a fascinating and controversial figure in Chinese history.  She was not of noble birth, but became the concubine of the Xian Feng Emperor during the Qing (Manchu) Dynasty.  She later ruled China for forty-seven years, from 1861 until her death in 1908.
