What's In A Name?
“Jeniffer” “Jennifer Bernadette Wang” ”Jen Wang”, of Disgrasian and now on XOJane, ponders the importance of (not) having a middle name. I too am a Jennifer with NMN.  For years I wanted Elizabeth.  My immigrant parents tacked Jennifer in front of my Chinese (legal) name and created an unofficial middle name. Speaking of name weirdness, when my Mom started...

If Sherlock Holmes Can Come Back, Why Not Charlie... →
My husband-in-the-next-life, Jeff Yang, argues that a new Charlie Chan movie should be made.  I agree. So imagine a reinvented Charlie Chan — younger, leaner, rawer and primed for action; a Hawaiian Chinese cop shaped by the tradition and philosophy of his ancestors, but firmly embedded in American culture. Someone with humble beginnings (and the humility to remember them), who’s risen to his...

What I've Learned This Holiday Season
So far.  The holidays aren’t over yet. The Good: Putting on 20 lbs. in the past few years means that I can now drink alcohol.  I really enjoyed the pink champagne we had for X’mas Eve dinner.  I poured many champagne cocktails for myself in my fancy @ss flute X’mas day. The Abilify is working well and allows me to separate my emotions from my thoughts, so I don’t react...

Oh Right, That's Why I Feel Sh!tty
It’s the anniversary of my Dad’s accident, the one that caused an acute, traumatic head injury which led to this death a few weeks later. I’m always preoccupied on this day with holiday stuff, but then it hits me at some point why I feel like cr@p. Even when I am not conscious of the date I am very sensitive to psychic energies.   His accident was when my psychic abilities...

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
The Good: Holiday cards are unfucked (all hand written and addressed, some with personal messages) and went out with today’s mail.  Freako is home from college and helped select and order a gift for Mr. Kitty.  I’m gonna spend a few days with my Mom next week, down in Maryland. The Bad: I skipped a few years of holiday cards when I was horribly depressed, didn’t answer...

Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows
(Have not read the books, am judging the movie on its own merits.) Briefly: it was a fun ride, though it started off slowly.  Overall the story is stronger, the conflict tighter, so IMHO it’s better than the first movie, but mildly so. 7/10. The good: Wonderful steam punk feel of sets, gorgeous location shots, very good use of special and photographic effects (in particular when Holmes et...

The Japanese American Citizens League Opposes...
curate:   “Just over a week ago, the Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which in its current form will allow the military to place American citizens suspected of terrorism in indefinite detention without charge or trial. “JACL is deeply concerned with the language of this bill because of our own experience with illegal indefinite detention during World War II. The...

Virginia blocks same-sex couples from adopting →
nefariousnewt: abaldwin360: ceasesilence: gaywrites: Virginia’s Board of Social Services approved on Wednesday certain measures relating to adoption that will aid in blocking same-sex couples from adopting kids.  A previous version of the regulations included an anti-discrimination policy that kept adoption agencies from discriminating against potential parents based on sexual...

I dreamed that I slept with a co-worker last night...
tehblackbird: Speaking of awkward dreams: I was reunited with high school people, including the crush who couldn’t stand me—and he was still dogging me 31 years later.  I confronted him, called him on his bullsh!tty behavior though.  Then spent the rest of the dream falling asleep while driving.  Fortunately no car crashes.  Yikes.

Can't Keep Up wtih the Drugs--And Other Inanities
OY, what is this K2, AKA fake cannabis?  Is that what Freako and his friends smoke when they come home?  They come in reeking of potpourri, which I assumed was air freshener that they sprayed to mask the Salvia—and pot?—they smoke. Ugh, am too old, cloistered, and ignorant of these matters. Must I go on research missions to head shops and gas stations now?? Other random morning...

我什至不能* (I Can't Even)
(*this is how google trasnlates the phrase “I can’t even”, but I have know idea how if it accurately conveys the meaning.) Did any of you catch the NPR story on the Chinese “Wolf Dad” this morning?  I wanted to punch the radio so hard that it would crush this parent’s tyrant’s gonads.  He has one thousand(!!!) rules on how to behave.  He trained beat...

Thank you, Interwebz
I’ve grown so much since I entered the Matrix of internet chatting spaces, starting with  IMDB’s classic board and Jezebel, then moving to the Basement, and now here on Tumblr.  You all have taught me so much about so many topics, and given me tons of support and love.   I’m glad that I can use the knowledge I’ve gained and the strength I’ve built up to pass on to my...
